Genesis

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Now the earth was unformed and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters."
"And God said: 'Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.' And God made the firmament, and divided that waters that were under the firmament from the waters that were above the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven."

The language of Genesis compresses the creation story into dramatic images of earth, sea, and sky. Swarms of fish appear in the waters below and birds fly above "in the open firmament of heaven."
On the edge of a storm over Lake Superior, I stand in spiritual unity with ancient people. Their narrative draws on recurring natural phenomena to describe the work of an all-powerful Creator.
Majestic swirling clouds are separated from still waters below. A bright firmament of light appears on the horizon. It hovers on the surface of the sea; and my observations become a profound experience.
